This episode of Rebels finds The Ghost low on fuel and in deep space. Desperate for fuel, the crew of the Ghost finds a mining operation and a strange and mysterious alien species.
The Music again. Kevin Kiner has been doing excellent work all season, but his music in the last two episodes of Rebels has been nothing short of astounding. I specifically enjoyed the music that accompanied the assault on the Mining Guild station (when they secured the landing platform). It was a percussion laden piece that was memorable and engaging. It added a great deal of excitement and urgency to the sequence. I can’t wait to see what Kiner does next.
I can’t believe I am typing this, but I really thought the space whales… ahem… the purggil were interesting and I honestly never thought they were ridiculous. I had that worry going into the episode. What makes them so interesting is that they add to the mystery and wonder of the Star Wars galaxy. That is always a good thing and what makes Star Wars special.
Ezra’s connection to the purggil and how his power is growing. In the comic book, Obi-Wan and Anakin Issue #2, we see arguably one of the best Jedi (Anakin) struggle with making a connection with alien creatures. On the other hand it comes so naturally to Ezra. While Ezra might not be as powerful as Anakin, he is becoming something to reckon with. This has been a theme with Ezra since season one and I think it might be leading somewhere very important. It is going to be fun to see where it leads.
What Didn’t Work?
It is a really good episode. I was interested, engaged, and surprised that the purggil worked so well. As the episode came to a close I felt that this episode stood on its own very well.
The only real problem I had with the episode was that the Mining Guild Overseer was too much of a stock character… it seems like Filoni and crew were aware of it and it results in the best line of the show (see below).
Over all it is a good episode that was, for me, the most surprising of the season so far. I would not mind seeing the purggil again.
Best line: I laughed out loud when Kanan said,
“I can’t believe we are going to lose to this guy!”
He gets some of the best lines.
