  1. I really enjoyed the discussion on the idea of Boba Fett as the main villain of “Return of the Jedi.”

However, one thing I’ll toss out there, based primarily on my reading of “The Secret History of Star Wars,” on the development of the Star Wars scripts: I strongly suspect the idea of Fett as the villain of the third Star Wars film existed around the time of Leigh Brackett’s “Empire Strikes Back” first draft script, back when “Empire” was still Chapter 2 of the Star Wars saga and 12 movies were intended–and before Lucas made the decision that Darth Vader and Anakin Skywalker would become the same character and “Empire” would be numbered Episode V. My understanding is that original draft hues much closer to Star Wars’s, serialized, “adventure of the week”-style roots in “Flash Gordon” and “Buck Rogers.” In that scenario, before Star Wars tilted more toward its mythic side, it’s not so hard to imagine Fett as the main villain of a film. And in a Star Wars universe where the Vader-is-Luke’s-father plotline doesn’t need to be resolved because it isn’t the case, it’s much easier to understand why Lucas would go this direction.
